Canton of Vaud

Working in the canton of Vaud while living in France

Lausanne, Nyon, Vevey, the Vallée de Joux: if you work in the canton of Vaud and live in France, your taxes do not work the same way as in Geneva. Here is what to do, step by step.

In short
  • Your salary is taxed in France, not in Switzerland.
  • Every year, give your employer form 2041-AS, signed by your tax office.
  • Health insurance and G permit: same rules as in Geneva.

Your taxes: in France, not in Switzerland

The canton of Vaud applies the 1983 Franco-Swiss agreement. Your salary is taxed only in France, where you declare it every year. In return, France pays Switzerland 4.5% of cross-border workers' gross salaries: you have nothing extra to pay for this.

The steps, one by one

  1. Fill in form 2041-AS (certificate of tax residence), sections I to III.
  2. Have it signed by your French tax office, which fills in section IV to confirm that you live in France.
  3. Give it to your employer before your first day of work, then every year before 1 January. Your employer sends a copy to the canton.
  4. In the following years, you receive a pre-filled form (2041-ASK), provided you attach your Swiss salary certificate to your income tax return.
  5. Declare your salary in France on annex 2047-SUISSE. For 2025 income, the pre-filled conversion rate is 1 CHF = 1.07 €.
Without the certificate: your employer deducts withholding tax from your salary until you hand it in. Your employer can correct this and refund you until 31 March of the following year.

The conditions to meet

  • Return home at least 4 days a week if you work full time.
  • No more than 45 nights a year in Switzerland for work reasons.
  • Remote work: 40% maximum of your working time, without losing this arrangement.
  • Exception: if you have Swiss nationality (even with another nationality) and work for a public employer (canton, municipality, state school), the tax is still deducted in Switzerland.

Health insurance and G permit

The rules are the same as in Geneva, because they apply to all of Switzerland: you have 3 months to choose between Swiss and French health insurance, and this choice is final. The G permit is requested by your employer and is valid for all of Switzerland. See our health insurance and G permit guides.
