Getting your cross-border G permit

The G permit is the authorisation that lets you work in Switzerland while living in France. For a European citizen, the process is simple and the employer usually takes care of it.

In short
  • You need a contract with a Swiss company.
  • Your employer applies on your behalf.
  • You must return home to France at least once a week.

The conditions (European Union citizens)

  • Have an employment contract, or at least a job offer, with a company based in Switzerland.
  • Live in a European Union country, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein (France counts, of course).
  • Return to your main home at least once a week.

Some cantons may add conditions.

You do not need a new permit, but the change must be reported to the canton. In Geneva, the deadline is 14 days.

Not a European citizen?

In Geneva, a G permit is possible if you already hold a B or C permit, if you have worked in Switzerland for two years for the same employer and are staying with them, and if you live in the border zone. The employer applies online and receives a reply within 12 weeks.
