Net to gross salary: how much should you ask for in Geneva?
Do you know how much you want to receive each month? This calculator works out the gross salary to ask your future Geneva employer for, including withholding tax.
How to use the result
- Talk in annual gross terms: in Switzerland, salaries are almost always negotiated as a gross amount per year.
- Ask whether the salary is paid in 12 or 13 months: for the same annual salary, the monthly amount changes.
- Keep enough to pay for health insurance: it is not deducted from your salary and you have to pay it yourself.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the gross go up faster than the net?
The higher the salary, the higher the withholding tax rate, and it applies to the whole salary. So each extra franc of net needs a little more gross.
Does the calculation work for another canton?
No, it uses the Geneva tax scale. In the canton of Vaud, for example, cross-border workers pay their taxes in France.
